Coach Rhonda Farney Minimize

Rhonda Farney graduated Summa Cum Laude—only a teenager at the time—from Howard Payne University. She then coached basketball and track and taught English at Goldthwaite High School for 10 years, followed by a two-year stint at Ozona High School.

While at Goldthwaite, she was the only girls coach on staff, coaching the seventh, eighth, junior varsity, and varsity basketball teams. At the varsity level, her teams won 10 district championships, four bi-district championships, two area championships, and made four regional appearances. Her team won 20 or more games each season, and nine players received college scholarships.


She was selected Central Texas Coach of the Year on four different occasions and received the TABC Milestone Award in April 1990 for 300 wins, in 1993 for 400 wins, in 1996 for 500 wins, in 2000 for 600 wins, and in 2004 for 700 career varsity wins. In 1998, she was selected the District VI (TX, NM, LA, OK, MI, AR) Converse Coach of the Year and Fox SW’s Coach Who Makes a Difference. Recently, she was named the National Federation’s Section 6 (TX, NM, CO, AZ, OK, LA) Coach of the Year.

She is a former President of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and Texas Girls Coaches Association. She was named 1991 TGCA Coach of the Year and was voted by her peers to coach both the TABC and TGCA All-Star games in 1993. On the national scene, in April of 1996, she traveled to Philadelphia as the assistant coach for the Nike-WBCA All-American game seen on ESPN2. In April of 2003, she was named the head coach for the Phoenix-WBCA Presented by Nike All-American game seen live on ESPN2 and played in front of 10,000 fans in the Hartford, CT Civic Center. She has served four years on the WBCA and National Federation Coaches Association Board of Directors and has served a term on the National Federation Basketball Rules Committee. She has been named the chair of the USA Basketball Cadet and Youth Committee, where she has helped select the players and coaches for the Summer Youth Development Festival. The summer of 2001, she was one of two high school coaches who served as a floor coach for the Junior National Trials in Colorado Springs, CO. Most recently, she was the assist coach for the 2005 Youth Development Festival, where her team won the gold. She also chairs the Hall of Fame Committee for TABC.

Presently, Coach Farney is in her ninteenth year at Georgetown as the head basketball coach and girls’ athletic coordinator. The 1991 team finished 32-4 and advanced to the UIL state final four. In 1992, the 33-3 team advanced to the state finals before falling to Canyon Randall by a single point. All five starters signed scholarships, worth cumulatively more that $500,000. Farney rung up a 66-7 record in two seasons. The next season with zero returning starters and only one returning letter winner, Georgetown made the playoffs and lost in bi-district. In 1994, the team won three invitational tournaments and advanced to the regional semifinals, ending with a 26-8 record. In 1995, Georgetown was ranked as high as fifth in the USA TODAY poll and finished the season as a regional semifinalist at 32-2. In 1996, Georgetown was a 5A state semifinalist with a 34-3 record. In 1997, the team went 28-5 and finished as area finalist. In 1998, Georgetown was a regional semifinalist with a record of 27-7.

In 1999, Georgetown played the toughest schedule in recent history making it to the regional quarterfinals and posting a 20-14 record. In 2000, the Lady Eagles won the prestigious Las Vegas invitational and were area finalist with a record of 27-6. In 2001, the team finished 27-6 and were again area finalist. In 2002, her team was 28-5 and made it to the regional quarterfinals. In 2003, the team won district with a 14-0 record, defeated Spring Westfield in area, Cy-Fair in regional quarterfinals, Plano in the regional tournament semifinals, and defeated Rockwall in the finals to advance to the 5A state tournament. Georgetown defeated Fort Bend Hightower in the state semifinals before losing to Duncanville in the finals. The team played eight USA Today Top 25 teams, defeating four of them in the Georgetown Thanksgiving Tournament, Air Force Rotary Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, and the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, AZ, respectively. Georgetown was ranked third in TABC’s final poll. In 2004, the Lady Eagles won the Georgetown Thanksgiving Tournament and all four games in the Lady Bulldog Holiday Classic in Las Vegas, NV, defeating the #9 nationally ranked Centennial, as well as, defeating Stony Point in a district playoff and advancing to the area round of the state playoffs, ending with a 24-10 record. In 2005, Georgetown played 13 playoff teams including Pflugerville, Pflugerville Connally, and Brock that played in the state tournament. They played two nationally ranked teams including the national champions, Christ the King. The team won district and defeated Temple in area before falling to Pflugerville in the regional quarterfinals, ending with a 27-9 record. In 2006, Georgetown was district tri-champions and lost to the eventual state runnerup Rockwall, 34-43, ending the season 23-12. In 2007, the Lady Eagles went 20-12 and were district runner-up. The team played in the prestigious Deep South Classic in Atlanta, GA. going 3-2.


Today, more that 33 young women, whom Farney has coached, are coaching or preparing to enter the coaching profession. She has coached 49 players who have gone on to play collegiate basketball. She has lectured at numerous Texas basketball clinics as well as clinics in AK, AL, CA, CO, FL, GA, IA, IN, MO, NY, OH, PA, and WY. Coach Farney’s career record is 791-237.
