It was a very successful five-day period — Jan. 15-19 — for the Georgetown Lady Eagles. Coach Rhonda Farney claimed her 1,200th career victory on Friday and then directed her team to 43-point (66-23) victory over arch-rival East View on Tuesday that moved them within one victory of guaranteeing its 31st consecutive trip to the UIL state playoffs. Odds are strong that their current 8-1 district record would push them into the postseason, but a road victory at 8 p.m. Friday at Leander, 0-9 in 25-5A competition, would push the Lady Eagles into the 128-team single-elimination derby for the state title.
Georgetown currently is ranked fifth in 5A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches with an 18-3 record. They are just two wins short of their 32nd consecutive 20-win campaign with a tough four-game regular-season close out facing them — back-to-back games with Rouse, a road venture to Liberty Hill, and closer at home with No. 1 ranked Cedar Park. The Lady Eagles will play a make-up game at Rouse at 2 p.m. Saturday. Rouse was 4-3 going into its Friday battle with East View. The Lady Raiders, trying to battle back from a pair of Covid-19 quarantines, are coming off a 41-36 loss to East View and a 64-60 win over Glenn in their two previous starts. Except for its one-sided loss to Cedar Park on Jan. 8, the Lady Eagles have dominated their 25-5A opponents, positing a victory margin of 26.8 points with the exception of the loss to the top-ranked Lady Timberwolves. GHS, which has won 12 of its last 13 starts, bested Leander, 57-23. in the initial district meeting at Eagle Gym on Dec. 18. In its trip to being winless in ten district games, Leander, 3-14 on the season, has been outscored by an average of 29.1 points a game and by more than 30 points five times. They are 3-14 Their last victory was over Bastrop Cedar Creek pm Dec. 4. Like Glenn at 6-4, Rouse is still a serious contender for a playoff spot with seven games remaining. The Raiders are 11-5 on the year but only have played three games since Dec. 5.
Looking at the victory over East View, Farney said, “I wish we would play like that every night. We rebounded really well and that’s been a continuing goal for us. Everybody got with it and contributed to the victory. Our kids in the middle did what we asked of them.” Georgetown scored the first seven points of the game and expanded the lead at the end of the first quarter to 20-7. They scored the final eight of the final nine points of the second quarter to build a 23-point lead (35-12) at the half. The Lady Eagles then outscored East View, 23-2, over the first nine minutes and 10 seconds of the second half. GHS’ largest lead was 44 points at 58-14 with 6:50 to play, Nine of the 10 Lady Eagles taking the court scored as GHS shot 46 percent from the floor (28-61) as compared to East View’s 22 percent (9-40). Junior guard Jacqui Spencer aggressively taking the ball to the hoop led GHS with 15 points, while senior point guard Graci Harris added 11. Senior forward Lauren Woodard added nine points and junior guard Morgan Larson scored eight. Six players scored for EV, but only one had more than four points.
GHS took 36-20 rebounding edge with 6-4 junior center Niah Williams along with three blocks, including one from the arc that would double for a super kill in volleyball. Mary Brown had 10 rebounds for Dave Walla’s Lady Patriots. Georgetown stole the ball 18 times with a team-effort of slapping hands and forced 22 turnovers, while only nine itself. It was Georgetown’s second victory of the season against East View, reversing last season’s showing.
The Georgetown’s unbeaten JV, which had been idle the last three playing dates because of situations facing their opponents, downed East View, 66-27, to improve to 8-0 in 25-5A and 20-0 for the season. Amiya Gonzales led GHS with 20 points, while Jane Butler added 14, including four 3-pointers. The Lady Eagles, who led 36-19 at the half, shut out East View in the third quarter and limited the young Lady Patriots to eight points in the half. The Freshman Blue (8-0 in 25-5A and 15-2 for the season took a forfeit victory over East View because of a pandemic protocol.
