If Georgetown beats Liberty Hill at 8 p.m. Tuesday and no Covid-19 pandemic situations intercede, the sixth-ranked Lady Eagles (4-0, 14-2) and No. 1 Cedar Park (5-0, 11-1) will collide for the District 25-5A lead at 8 p.m. in the Timberdome. Coach Rhonda Farney’s Lady Eagles improved to 4-0 in the district Saturday with a 57-23 Senior Night victory over eighth-place Leander. Cedar Park, which pounded Liberty Hill, 57-21, last Thursday will be idle from 25-5A action as its scheduled opponent, Leander Rouse, remains in Covid-19 quarantine.
Liberty Hill who is 1-3 in the district and 5-7 for the season that Georgetown is to face, expected to be a serious contender for a playoff berth. In 25-5A action, the Lady Panthers have beaten Marble Falls, 45-36, lost to East View, 51-49; Rouse, 47-45 in overtime, and Cedar Park, 57-21. Georgetown, which is riding an eight-game victory streak, has rolled to district wins over Leander Glenn, 59-34; Marble Falls, 59-39; East View, 47-32; and Leander, 57-23 — an average victory margin of 23.5 points a game. The Lady Eagles had four players finish in double figures against the Lady Lions, now 0-4 in the district, with 6-4 junior post-Niah Williams leading with 13 points. Senior point guard Graci Harris and senior forward Lauren Woodard each added 12 points, while junior guard Jacqui Spencer scored 10. Georgetown put down 54.5 percent of its shots from the floor (24 of 44), outrebounded Leander, 20-19, and posted a 16-4 edge in steals. Harris pulled down six boards and Spencer had five steals. The Lady Eagles forced 25 turnovers while making 18 of their own.
Leander, which got 14 of its points from Parker Bailey, made just 22 percent of its shots (7 of 31). Williams blocked three shot attempts by the Lady Lions and 6-1 junior Sheila Lee knocked down two others. “I was really excited and proud of our seniors (Harris, Woodard, Herring, and Stout),” Farney said. “The girls made a really good effort against a very physical opponent. I’m looking for the rest of the district race to be very tough. Teams we played for the first time are going to be tougher such as Marble Falls. “We’re glad to be where we are at this point and excited about getting to play Liberty Hill. “Our freshman got a real test today from one of the better freshman groups in the district and the JV got another good win.”
As a befitting Senior Night, Woodard scored the first three baskets of the game as GHS took an 8-0 lead and was up 15-4 after the first quarter. The Lady Eagles stretched the lead to 28-9 at the half and moved it out to 22 points — 39-17 — in the third quarter. GHS put the lid on the victory by outscoring LHS, 18-4, in the final quarter with Spencer scoring the final five points. Senior manager Daniel Cunningham also was honored during the post-game ceremony. The Georgetown JV and Freshman Blue improved their district marks to 4-0 with coach Corey Cunningham’s JV posting a 55-18 victory to improve its record to 16-0, while Katie Youngblood’s Freshman Blue had to fight to the end to post a 29-25 win to stand 11-2 for the year.
In the JV contest, the Lady Eagles built a 31-9 lead by halftime Eight of nine players ended in the scoring column. Madelyne Furr led GHS with 17 points, while Brooke White and Amiya Gonzales added eight and seven, respectively. In its four district games, Georgetown has averaged a 38.3 victory margin. With Caroline Rutledge’s 12 points (eight in the second half) leading the way, GHS outscored the first-year Riders, 16-12, in the second half. Lucy Waring added eight points for the Lady Eagles. Tuesday night’s sub-varsity schedule has the Freshman A game at 5:15 p.m. and JV at 6:30 p.m.
