After a 17-day absence from district competition — Covid 19 quarantines at two rival schools and the Christmas break — Georgetown’s Lady Eagles will return to 25-5A action at 2 p.m. Saturday when it plays host to eighth-place Leander at Eagle Gym. Coach Rhonda Farney’s Lady Eagles stand 13-2 for the season and in second place in the district at 3-0 and are riding a seven-game winning streak, including four non-district games.  Because of pandemic procedures at Leander and Rouse, GHS has not played a district game since they bested arch-rival East View on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

In its three district wins over Leander Glenn, Marble Falls, and East View, sixth-ranked GHS has posted an average victory margin of 20 points a game. They are coming off a 52-35 win against 6A Copperas Cove this past Tuesday. They were scheduled to play Leander Rouse on Thursday, but that contest was postponed for the second time by a Covid-19 quarantine at the Leander ISD school. When it has been able to play, Leander’s Lady Lions (0-3 in the district and 3-7 for the season) have lost their three 25-5A contests by an average of 40.3 points a start, falling 75-23 to first-place Cedar Park, 68-30 to Rouse and 64-33 to Marble Falls in its most-recent start on Thursday. After playing the Lady Lions, Georgetown will face Liberty Hill, 1-3 in the district, at home on Tuesday and then travel to the Timberdome to play the top-ranked Lady Timberwolves (5-0 in the district and 10-1 for the season) on Friday.  The varsity games with Liberty Hill and Cedar Park will revert back to the regular 25-5A schedule — varsity at 8 p.m., JV at 6:30 p.m., and a freshman at 5:15 p.m.

Saturday’s varsity battle with Leander will be preceded by an 11 a.m. freshman battle and a 12:30 p.m. JV contest. All district games — by district rule — will be played in the main gyms.  Both the GHS JV, coached by Corey Cunningham, and the Freshman Blue, coached by Katie Youngblood, also stand 3-0 in the district.  The JV is 15-0 for the season and the Freshman Blue is 10-2. The JV with a starting five of Taylor Meyners, Brooke White, Madelyne Furr, Erica Ramthun, and Amya Gonzales has ripped through its opponents with an average victory margin of 38.9 points a game. Only twice has the victory margin fallen under 22 points — 15 points against 6A Round Rock Westwood and 16 to the Florence varsity. They have twice held opponents to six or fewer points and have won by 55 or more points on three occasions. The Freshman Blue has relied on a 1-2 punch with post-Lucy Waring and ball-hawking guard Caroline Rutledge scoring 327 of the team’s 497 points. With a season-program high of 34 points against Marble Falls and five efforts of 20 points or more, Waring tops the points chart with 210, while Rutledge has 117, including seven games in double digits. The defense also has been a key for the Blue. They have held the opposition to less than seven points three times and have a victory margin of 26.3 points despite the two losses. In their three district starts they have limited Glenn to 2 points, Marble Falls to five and East View to 19.
