As 2020 –the year of uncertainty — fades into history on New Year’s Eve. At least one thing is certain for the Georgetown Lady Eagles. Three scheduled make-up games with Leander Rouse will not be on Thursday’s menu. The Raiders will be on the third day of their second Covid-19 quarantine of the District 25-5A season.  Sixth-ranked Georgetown (13-2, 3-0) and No. 23 Rouse (9-3, 2-1) were scheduled to make up their postponed games on Tuesday, Dec. 22, on Thursday. However, Rouse, which just returned for one day from its first quarantine, will be early in its second 14-day absence from competition.

Georgetown head coach Rhonda Farney said Tuesday after the Lady Eagles’ 52-35 non-district win over Copperas Cove at Eagle Gym that she did not know when those games eventually would be made up. The regular 25-5A schedule calls for GHS to play host to the Raiders on Tuesday, Jan. 26. Rouse was in a similar situation in volleyball but was able to battle back and capture the district championship by winning six 25-5A matches in a nine-day span, including back-to-back victories over Georgetown and Cedar Park on the same day. The Lady Eagles, who fell into second place Tuesday when No. 1-ranked Cedar Park put a 75-23 whipping on Leander to improve to 4-0, face another make-up situation on Saturday when they face Leander at 2 p.m. That game will be preceded by a freshman A game at 11 a.m. and a JV battle at 12:30 p.m. If all goes as currently scheduled, Georgetown will face two of its biggest challenges in the first half of the 14-game district race with a home date against Liberty Hill on Tuesday, Jan. 5, and a road venture to Cedar Park on Friday, Jan. 8. Both of those varsity games are set for 8 p.m. tipoffs.

“I was very pleased that we were able to hold them (Copperas Cove) to 35 points,” Farney said of a win that dropped the visiting Lady Bulldawgs to 5-11. “They were a very physical opponent. After a slow start, we got the peddle to the metal. It was a game in which everybody contributed. “I also was pleased with the play of our sub-varsity teams.” The unbeaten GHS JV (14-0) posted a 56-19 win and the Freshman Blue (10-2) took a 43-22 victory despite playing with just five on the court and one on the bench.  In the varsity match with Cove, GHS trailed 7-6 after the first quarter but opened the second period with a run of 10 consecutive points — six by 6-4 junior post-Niah Williams. They had thongs well under control with a 22-13 halftime lead.  They came out hot in the third quarter, scoring the first nine points en route to a 21-point edge late in the period. Georgetown’s largest lead was 22 points at 41-19 with 6:15 remaining in the contest.

Senior point guard Graci Harris led in scoring with 16 points, while Williams and junior guard Jacqui Spencer added 10 and nine points, respectively.  The long-armed Spencer had seven steals and Williams blocked four shots. Junior post-Sheila Lee pulled down seven boards. Guards Taylor Meyners and Brooke White led the JV by scoring a total of 16 and 15 points as Corey Cunningham’s Lady Eagles outscored Cove, 24-9 in the first half and 32 in the second half. For coach Katie Youngblood’s Freshman Blue, Lucy Waring scored 20 points and guard Caroline Rutledge added 13.
