Two state-ranked teams — Georgetown and Boerne — needing to fill holes in their schedules prior to the Christmas Break will collide at 2 p.m. Monday at Eagle Gym. Coach Rhonda Farney’s Lady Eagles, 11-2 on the year after besting 6A Buda Hays, 69-54 on Friday night, was ranked ninth in 5A in last week’s Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, while the Lady Greyhounds, with a 10-1 mark, were fifth in 4A. Boerne had its Friday game with San Antonio Incarnate Word canceled.
The Lady Eagles were replacing a home date with Leander with the victory over the Hays Rebels and will be playing Boerne in place of a contest at Leander Rouse. After the holiday break, GHS will return to action at 2 p.m. Tuesday with a home game against 6A Copperas Cove. Despite the two 25-5A postponements, Georgetown can do no worse than a 3-0 deadlock with No. 1-ranked Cedar Park in the district standings. The Lady Timberwolves can pull even with the Lady Eagles with a victory over East View on Tuesday at the Timberdome. GHS’s three district wins have been over Glenn (59-34), Marble Falls (59-39), and East View (47-32). GHS is scheduled to face a busy 25-5A agenda after the Copperas Cove encounter, facing the make-up games with Rouse (on Thursday, Dec. 31) and Leander (on Saturday, Jan. 2) along with regular-schedule challenges at home with Liberty Hill (on Tuesday, Jan. 5) and at Cedar Park (on Friday, Jan. 8).
Boerne has won two straight games since dropping a 58-36 decision to 6A San Antonio Clark on Dec. 4. GHS has won five straight since falling 43-41 to Waco La Vega at Bellmead. The Lady Greyhounds, who are in the same district with No. 3 Fredericksburg, return seven players, including four starters from last year’s 27-9 squad. “We did a good job tonight,” Farney said of the victory over Hays, which competes in one of the area’s toughest 6A districts with Lake Travis and Austin Westlake. “I was pleased with what we showed tonight. I felt we really got after it on defense. “We felt that the long layoff between the East View and Copperas Cove games (two full weeks) would be too long for us to stay sharp with four district games (including the two make-up games) coming up in a short time period.” The Lady Eagles had one of their best shooting games of the season, putting down 57 percent from the floor (24 of 42) with senior point guard Graci Harris scoring 15 points and juniors Jacqui Spencer and Niah Williams adding 12 and 11 points, respectively. Hays, now 8-4 on the year, shot 46 percent (21 of 45) with Lily Guevera scoring a game-high 16 points.
Each team pulled down 21 rebounds with Morgan Larson leading GHS with five, but the Lady Eagles had a solid defensive margin with an 18-7 edge in steals and nine fewer turnovers (13 to 22). Spencer supported her scoring with team-highs of nine steals and seven assists along with one block. The 6-4 Williams blocked three shots. With senior forward Lauren Woodard, Harris, and Larson leading the way, GHS jumped to early 10-point advantages ar 12-2 and 14-4, but Hays sliced the lead to 20-12 by the end of the first period. Two baskets by Spencer late in the second quarter put the Lady Eagles up by 14 points, but a closing run of seven points by the Lady Rebels cut the halftime lead to seven. Hays came out strong in the third period with six consecutive points to slice the GHS lead to one at 32-31. However, the Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Rebels, 22-9, during the remainder of the quarter to restore order with junior post-Sheila Lee, Harris, and Williams leading the charge. Georgetown closed out the victory by posting a 17-14 edge in the fourth period. The GHS JV, which owns a 13-0 season record will return to action Monday when it plays Boerne at 12:30 p.m.

A Salado Flex team of freshmen and sophomores outscored the GHS Freshman White, 16-8, in the second half to claim a 30-21 victory Friday afternoon at Eagle Gym. Melodi Valdez scored seven points to lead the Lady Eagles, who fell to 1-6 on the season. Georgetown and Salado are scheduled to meet again at 9 a.m. Monday in Salado.
