At all levels of athletic endeavor  teams can have both good days and bad days — relative to their ability. And so it was for the Georgetown Lady Eagles in this past weekend’s 41st annual Jack Frost Tournament at Eagle Gym. They won four of five games, sweeping three pool contests on Thursday and Friday and then performing below the standard expected by coach Rhonda Farney in Saturday’s semifinal win over Ponder and 27-point loss to highly ranked Cedar Park in the Gold Bracket finals.

In their three Pool A games, the Lady Eagles downed Austin Akins, 55-30; Killeen, 52-39; and San Antonio Incarnate Word, 52-37 — an average victory margin of 17 points a game. However, Saturday was a different tale for Georgetown — they went scoreless in the first quarter against Class 3A Ponder before battling back to a 37-37 deadlock at the end of regulation and winning 49-39 in overtime. Farney said she couldn’t remember the last time a Lady Eagles’ team didn’t score a single point in a quarter. The title contest was dominated by the Lady Timberwolves, now 17-2. Cedar Park led 19-9 after one quarter and pushed the lead to 20 or more with 1:50 to go before halftime and only once let their advantage fall under 20 points 37-18 with 4:34 left in the third quarter. The largest lead was 29 points in the closing minutes. The 4-1 record in the Jack Frost event did move GHS into 22nd place in the Texas High School Coaches Association Class 5A rankings that were released Monday. In going 5-0 in the Frost, Cedar Park moved from third to second in the rankings behind Amarillo.

Georgetown, having won 11 of their last 12 games, will take an 11-5 mark into their District 18-5A opener at Bastrop at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Lady Bears, who were picked fifth in the seven-team alignment by Dave Campbell’s Texas Basketball magazine, list a record of 5-9 on Max Preps with some games counted more than once and others not reported. Farney said that she expected Bastrop to be a tough test in their own gym. “In our first three games we did a lot of good things and made big strides,” Farney said after the tournament, “but we weren’t as sharp as we wanted to be today. However, in the Ponder game, we game back and won. It was a game in which the officiating was horrendous. We didn’t let the game get away from us and fought back to win.” With four minutes and 52 seconds remaining in regulation in the Ponder game, GHS trailed 35-27, but the Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Lions, 10-2, in the closing minutes to send the game into overtime on a pair of free throws by McCall Hampton.  But it was all Georgetown in the overtime as GHS posted a 12-2 edge. Ponder managed just two free throws in eight attempts in the bonus four minutes, while the Lady Eagles received a 3-pointer from Kylie Ellsworth, four free throws from Graci Harris, an old-fashioned 3-point play by 6-3 sophomore Nia Williams and a bucket by Hampton.

Georgetown shot 47.2 percent from the floor (17 of 36), while Ponder was held to 33 percent (13 of 39). Hampton and Ellsworth led GHS with 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Hampton and Kylee Sander were credited with six rebounds each. It was the second victory for Georgetown over Ponder as they defeated the Lady Lions, 49-38, in the consolation semifinals of the Eaton Tournament on Nov. 22. In the championship game, tournament MVP Shelby Hayes, a 6-foot sophomore, led Cedar Park with 18 points and 6-foot senior Nicole Leff added 15. Hampton led GHS with 19 points and 12 rebounds and was the most-consistent shooter for a Georgetown team  that made just 30.8 percent (12 of 39) of its shots from the floor, while Cedar Park hit 56.8 percent (21 of 37). “McCall played well against Cedar Park, which is a really good team,” Farney said. “We felt we should have done better and been more effective on defense.” Neither Farney nor Cedar Park coach Donny Ott were overly pleased with the officiating.

If the Class 5A Region III brackets remain the same as in past seasons, GHS and Cedar Park could meet again in the regional quarterfinals if they win their district championships. Both teams are favored. Georgetown placed three players on the all-tournament team — Hampton, Ellsworth and Harris. In the Lady Eagles’ tournament opener on Thursday, Sander scored 16 points, while Ellsworth and Hampton each added 11. Hampton had eight boards. Against Killeen, Ellsworth had 19 and Sander scored 13. On Friday night against San Antonio Incarnate Word, Hampton, Ellsworth and Harris shared the scoring honors with 10 points each. In other girls bracket finals, Class 4A power Sour Lake Hardin-Jefferson downed 6A Belton, 44-26, for the Silver crown and Saginaw Boswell beat Liberty Hill, 58-45, for the Bronze title. On the sub-varsity level the GHS Freshman Blue won the team title in the Pflugerville ISD’s Nancy Walling Tournament and the Lady Eagles JV claimed third (Sub varsity results will appear later in the week).
