Georgetown’s attempt to earn its 30th consecutive trip to the UIL state girls basketball playoffs under coach Rhonda Farney will begin Friday, Nov. 7, when the defending 18-5A champion Lady Eagles entertain Round Rock Cedar Ridge at Eagle Gym. After scrimmages at Belton and Austin Bowie, GHS will play a schedule of 21 single games and three tournaments. That workload will include a 12-game district schedule, which will begin at home against Bastrop on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and conclude at Eagle Gym on Tuesday, Feb. 11, against arch-rival East View.

The Lady Eagles, who went undefeated on all four levels of 18-5A competition last season, are the favorite again, but are expected to face serious challenges from Manor and East View. GHS went 12-0 in varsity, junior varsity and freshman A competition and 2-0 in freshman B as only Georgetown and East View fielded teams. The three varsity tournaments on the schedule are the Eaton Varsity Tournament in Fort Worth, Nov. 14-16; the 41st annual Jack Frost Tournament in Georgetown, Dec. 5-7; and the Flowing Wells Holiday Shootout in Tucson, Ariz., Dec. 27-28. The field for the Jack Frost will include defending champion The Colony, which edged Flower Mound Marcus, 52-50, for the title after eliminating Georgetown in the semifinals, 69-50. The tournament is considered one of the strongest holiday events in the state with 14 of the 16 teams last year qualifying for the state playoffs on their levels. At the current time, Georgetown and The Colony will be joined in the 16-team field by Ponder, Saginaw Boswell, Fort Worth Trimble Tech, San Antonio Incarnate Word, San Antonio Reagan, Belton, Hardin-Jefferson, Killeen, Leander Glenn, Liberty Hill, Houston St. Agnes, Austin Akins, Cedar Park and Houston Sharpstown. The 16-team holiday event in Tucson will see teams play two games each day.  Sahuaro High School of Tucson, which lost to Marshfield of Coos Bay, Ore., in last year’s finals, 40-37 in overtime, tops the field. Other schools include host Flowing Wells, Catalina Foothills, Palo Verde Magnet, Kofa, Buena, Sunnyside, Nogales, Marana, Desert Christian, Thatcher, Amphitheater, Empire, Ricon University, Pueblo Magnet and Georgetown. The field for the Eaton Tournament has not been announced, according to the Northwest ISD website.

In the district race, GHS will play Elgin and Bastrop Cedar Creek at home in the first half and Bastrop, Manor, Hutto and East View on the road.  The playing sites will be reversed in the second half. The two contests with East View will be played as part of girls/boys doubleheaders. The girls will play at 6 p.m. at East View on Friday, Jan. 17, and at 7:30 p.m. in the regular-season finale at Eagle Gym. In addition to Cedar Ridge, Georgetown will play non-district single games at home with Vista Ridge, Victoria East, Vandegrift, Kyle Lehman and Burnet. Road non-district contests will send the Lady Eagles to Waco Midway, Lorena and Austin Westlake. The Lady Eagles, who are currently practicing during the athletic period daily, can begin after school workouts on Wednesday, Oct. 23. They are scheduled to scrimmage Belton and Round Rock Stony Point on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Belton and at Austin Bowie on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The Meet the Eagles Ball is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27.

Special nights will include Halloween Festival (in costume) at Community Center, Oct. 24; Fan and Sun City Appreciation Night on Monday, Dec. 2; Honoring the 2013 State Championship Team Night on Tuesday, Dec. 17; Senior Night on Friday, Jan. 10; Family Night on Tuesday, Jan. 21; Dribbler and Middle School Night on Friday, Jan. 31; Cancer Warrior Night on Friday, Feb. 7; and Jam the Gym Night on Tuesday, Fen. 11.

Captains for the 2019-2020 team will be seniors McCall Hampton, Kylee Ellsworth, Mackenzy Mouton and junior Gracie Harris.  Harris was last season’s Newcomer of the Year in 18-5A and Hampton and Ellsworth were first-team all-district selections. Mouton was honorable mention all-district. Farney’s coaching staff will include Tosha Doherty (JV), Katie Youngblood (Freshman A) and Corey  Cunningham (Freshman B). Cunningham, who is replacing Kevin Spruill, comes to GHS after being head girls coach at Cameron Yoe. Lady Eagles Basketball Booster Club officers are Roxanne Youngblood, president; Dena Mouton, vice president; DeAnn Rutledge, secretary; Linda Silva, treasurer; Larry Plyter. Sun City president; and Jim and Karen Chapman, Sun City reps.
