For the 29th consecutive season under head coach Rhonda Farney, the Georgetown Lady Eagles

are headed to the UIL State Basketball Playoffs. Using a smothering defense to dominate East View, 45-18, on Tuesday night, the Lady Eagles (22-10) completed an unbeaten 12-0 run to the District 18-5A championship. It was the keystone win for a Georgetown program that did not lose a district game on any level this season. The Lady Eagles, who have constructed a nine-game win streak since returning from their holiday trip to Tennessee, will play their bi-district game against Marble Falls at 7 p.m. Monday at Liberty Hill.  The Lady Mustangs, who finished fourth in 17-5A, will be making their third consecutive appearance in the state playoffs. Georgetown will carry a consensus 5A state ranking of 10th into the playoffs.

The Georgetown-Marble Falls winner will advance to an area game against either 19-5A runner-up Magnolia West (21-10) or Tomball (19-8), the third-place team in 20-5A. West, which had to forfeit three district games because of an ineligible player, and Tomball are scheduled to play their bi-district game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Tomball Memorial gym. Tuesday’s victory over East View, which came on the Lady Patriots’ court, extended Georgetown’s dominance in the all-time series to 14-0. The Lady Eagles won the first meeting of the season, 38-33, at Eagle Gym on Jan. 11. The margin of victory was the most in the series since GHS took the  second meeting in 2013-2014 by a 71-38 count. The Lady Eagles limited the Patriots, who finished second in 18-5A with a 9-3 mark, to just nine successes in 31 attempts from the floor, including a 0-9 reading on efforts beyond the arch. East View turned the ball of 29 times and had its pocket picked 16 times. GHS only turned the ball over eight times.

“I’m excited and very proud of our kids,” said Farney. “They were mentally tough and played a great game on defense. I think tonight was the best game we’ve played this season against a quality opponent. I thought Samari (O’Brien) (Kylie) Ellsworth, (McCall) Hampton and (Jaelyn) Knights played extremely well. Graci (Harris) was steady for us and (post Jade) Smith had her best game of the year.” A “snail’s pace” might be an inadequate term to describe offense in the opening period. After eight minutes, GHS led 5-0 on a 3-pointer by Ellsworth and bucket inside by Knight. The pace picked up some in the second quarter as the Lady Eagles outscored East View, 13-10.  Coach Dave Walla’s Lady Patriots’ got their first points 22 second in the second period on a basket by 6-foot-1 junior Portia Leathers.

In the second half, Georgetown twisted the defensive screws even tighter as they outpointed EV, 17-4, in the third with Ellsworth accounting for 11 of the points. The Lady Eagles posted a 10-4 edge in the final quarter to complete the one-sided victory. Only five of the 11 played used by the GHS scored with Ellsworth putting down 16 and Knight adding 10. Hampton had  nine points and led the Lady Eagles with seven rebounds. O’Brien and J. Smith closed out Georgetown scoring with five points each. Smith added two blocks and four rebounds. O’Brien had six steals. Leathers had a team-high six points and 5-7 junior wing had six rebounds for East View. Georgetown junior post MacKenzy Mouton missed her second game with a leg problem, but Farney said she expected her back for the playoffs.

GHS won all three sub-varsity games. The JV playing against an East View JV, which was enhanced by three varsity players, posted a 43-38 win that allowed it to complete the season 12-0 in 18-5A and 25-2 on the season. The Lady Eagles, winning their 23 consecutive game, expanded a four-point lead, 29-25, after three with strong performance by junior Mercedes Robledo, who finished with 17 points. Jordan Stout added four three’s for 12 points. She has 17 3-pointers in her last three games.

The JV Blue also finished 12-0 in district and was 24-2 on the season as it bested the first-year Lady Patriots, 41-29, with Dylann Jones scoring 18 points and Brielle Maxwell adding time. The two schools played combined freshman teams on Monday after East View forfeited the freshman B game.  The GHS White finished 18-5A with a 2-0 mark since they were the only two schools in the district fielding B squads.

STATE PLAYOFF NOTES: The three other bi-district games for 18-5A teams are set for Monday  — runner-up East View will play Rouse, the third-place team from 17-5A, at Round Rock High School at 7 p.m.,  Manor, the No. 4 seed in 18-5A, will challenge 17-5A champion Cedar Park at  6:30 p.m. at Round Rock Cedar Ridge and Hutto, the third-place team from 18-5A, will  face Pflugerville, the 17-5A runner-up, at Pflugerville Hendrickson at 7 p.m.
