Georgetown’s Lady Eagles have clinched their 29th consecutive state playoff berth in coach Rhonda Farney’s 31 seasons at the school. The clincher came Friday night when they dominated Elgin, 57-25, at Eagle Gym. The victory improved 15th-ranked Georgetown’s District 18-5A record to 8-0 with four games still to play on the Lady Eagles’ schedule. Bastrop (2-6), Elgin (1-6) and Bastrop Cedar Creek (0-8) do not have enough games remaining to catch GHS. However, East View (6-2), Hutto (5-2) and Manor (5-3) still are within mathematical position to catch and pass Georgetown, pending how the remaining five playing dates in the district race work out. The Lady Eagles have their second-half bye Tuesday night, but they will have their eyes glued on East View’s gym where the Patriots and Hutto battle with the loser taking a serious hit in its chances of catching GHS. East View edged Hutto, 48-46, in the first meeting on the Hippos’ hardwoods. Tuesday’s other games send Manor to Elgin and Bastrop Cedar Creek to Bastrop with the Lady Mustangs and Lady Bears both being top-heavy favorites.

After taking Tuesday off, the Lady Eagles can clinch no worse than third place with a victory when they visit Manor at 7 p.m. in the new Manor Senior High School Gym, which is located on FM 973 adjacent to the district’ s football stadium. Georgetown downed Manor, 53-40, in the first meeting at Eagle Gym on Dec. 21.  The JV game also will be played at the new school at 5:30 p.m., but the freshman game will be at the old Manor High School campus. Beside playing on the road, the GHS coaching staff is expecting a tough challenge from Manor because of the Mustangs’ need to solidify their playoff position. Other 18-5A games will send Bastrop to Hutto and Cedar Creek to Bastrop.  East View has its open date. The Lady Eagles will conclude their 18-5A schedule against Bastrop Cedar Creek at home on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Hutto on Friday, Feb. 1; and at East View on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The game with the Patriots will be the 7:30 p.m. second half of a boys/girls doubleheader. Georgetown, now 18-10, needs to win two of its final games — regular-season or playoffs — to give Farney her 30th consecutive 20-win season at the school.

The Lady Eagles left little doubt in the outcome of this past Friday’s win over Elgin.  They jumped to a 10-2 margin in a slow first quarter and then sprinted out to a 30-8 edge at the half. GHS outscored the Lady Wildcats, 20-2, during the initial five minutes and 42 seconds of the second period. Georgetown led  41-14 after three and never let the lead fall under 24 points. The largest advantage was the final score. Farney said she was pleased with the team’s effort and ability to score off the break, but was somewhat concerned about the half-court offense.

Georgetown held Elgin to just 19 percent shooting from the floor (nine successes in 47 attempts), stole the ball 25 times, blocked five shots and forced a total of 27 turnovers. Junior post McCall Hampton led all scorers with 15 points, including a nine-of-ten effort from the free-throw line. Junior guard Hailey Smith made 10 points and senior post Jaelyn Knight added eight. GHS grabbed a 32-22 edge on the boards with Hampton pulling down seven. Andrenique Robertson led Elgin, now 13-17 on the season, with 12 points. In addition to being ranked 15th among 5A teams by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, the Lady Eagles are listed 11th by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

In Friday’s sub-varsity contests with Elgin, GHS improved its JV and Freshman Blue district marks to 8-0.  The JV rattled the young Lady Wildcats, 55-16, to improve their season reading to 21-2 and Blue bombed Elgin, 74-6, to extend their season record to 20-2. Mercedes Robledo and Megan Herring scored 16 and 12 points, respectively, to pace the JV, while Kristin Lott had 21 and Brielle Maxwell added 20 in the Freshman Blues’ win. The JV led 34-5 at the half and the Blue was up 31-4 at the midpoint. Playing a non-district game, the Freshman White, now 9-4, dropped a 40-29 game to the Jarrell Freshmen A. Morgan Larson scored 12 points for GHS.
