If athletic events can have drastic mood swings, Tuesday night’s District 18-5A opener between Georgetown and Bastrop at Eagle Gym probably would qualify for some couch time with whatever kind of counselor or analyst handles such occasions.Early, especially in the first period, the game appeared headed for a shootout with the Lady Bears holding a 10-8 lead with 2:26 remaining in the quarter. However a 3-pointer by sophomore point guard Gracie Harris put the Lady Eagles ahead to stay at 11-10. Back-to-back baskets lifted GHS to a 15-10 advantage after one period. But Bastrop stuck to Georgetown like hot gum on the Lady Eagles’ sneakers in the second quarter, which ended with GHS holding a 27-20 lead as the Lady Bears, who seemed very much alive, scoring eight of the final 12 points before halftime.

The second half was a different situation as GHS — led by Harris and senior post Jaelyn Knight — jumped the lead to double digits at 36-25 and never let the margin fall below seven points for the rest of the quarter. Junior post McCall Hampton scored the first five points of the fourth quarter and Georgetown never looked back en route to outscoring Bastrop, 45-26,  in the second half to secure the 72-46 victory. The victory left GHS in a three-way tie for first place in the seven-team district at 1-0 with East View (37-35 over Manor) and Hutto (70-26 over Bastrop Cedar Creek). The Lady Eagles, now 10-6 on the year, will return to 18-5A action next Tuesday when they travel to Elgin, which had the opening-night bye. Between now and then, coach Rhonda Farney’s Lady Eagles will entertain 25-6A favorite Austin Westlake, which played in the Pflugerville Tournament last week, is coming off a 28-23 win over Kyle Leahman in the Chaps’ district opener. GHS beat the Lady Lobos, 62-35, on the road on Monday, Nov. 26.

“It’s always nice to win,” Farney said. “After the grueling last couple weeks (a game with top-ranked Pflugerville Hendrickson, the 40th annual Jack Frost Tournament and lengthy road trips to Victoria East and Lehman), it feels good. We’ll be trying to rest our legs this week and get them back under us before Friday. “Graci looked good at point guard (12 points and five assists). McCall (18 points and 10 rebounds) and Jaelyn (18 points and nine rebounds) are producing close to double-doubles in the post.  And I liked the effort our kids made and the fact that we had three players scoring in double digits. We’ve have more depth than we’ve had recently. “We held their leading scorer (Kewaysha Alsup) to five points, but their big girl (5-foot-10 Kayla Holla) scored 17.” However, there were some negatives. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do,” Farney said. “We gave up too many points and had too many unforced errors.” Georgetown shot 45 percent from the floor and outrebounded Bastrop, 38-24. Defensively, GHS held the Lady Bears to just 15 makes in 52 shots from the floor (28 percent).

In sub-varsity action, the Georgetown JV and Freshman Blue opened their district campaigns by blowing out their rivals from Bastrop by a total of 115 points. The JV improved to 9-2 with a 62-24 victory, while the Blue dominated the first-year Lady Bears, 81-4  as it ran its record to 10-1. Junior Mercedes Robledo and sophomore Jordan Stout each scored 13 points to lead the JV and five players scored in double figures for the Blue — Kristin Lott, 16; Ella Vickers, 12; Samantha Folsom, 11; Jacqui Spencer, 11; and Lauren Cavanaugh, 10. The Blue continued its torrid streak in its last four games, posting a victory margin of 57.75 points a contest during the span, including a 59-1 victory over Victoria East. The GHS JV, Freshman Blue and Freshman White will compete in the Georgetown Sub-Varsity Tournament on Thursday and Saturday at both Eagle Gum and the GHS Auxiliary Gym (See pool assignments and a complete schedule below).
