Visitors to Elgin offen find time to feast at two of the region’s most-popular barbecue joints, but the Georgetown Lady Eagles basketball program enjoyed a different kind of feast on a chilly Friday night in the Bastrop County town.
Georgetown’s varsity, junior varsity and Freshman Blue turned the Wildcats’ gym into a pit of misery for the host school. The three GHS teams outscored their Elgin counterparts by a combined 177-25.
The varsity prevailed 65-17 to improve to 3-0 in the District 19-5A race to share second with Rouse and stand just behind Cedar Park, which improved to 4-0 with a 46-35 win over East View. The JV prevailed 56-12 and the Freshman Blue won 50-6.
“I was very pleased with the play of both the freshmen and JV tonight,” Georgetown coach Rhonda Farney said. “Each team played good defense and shot the ball well.
” I was particularly pleased with our varsity teams’s passing and execution on offense.  It led to shooting a higher percentage from the floor especially behind the arc.”
The Lady Eagles, winners of five of their last six starts, will try to remain at or near the top of the 19-5A standings at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they play struggling Bastrop at Eagle Gym.  The Bears are 1-3 in district and are coming off a surprising 58-56 loss to Bastrop Cedar Creek on Friday. Bastrop opened district play with a 61-50 win over East View before losing to Rouse, 67-38, and Cedar Park, 53-38.
Tuesday’s schedule will be headlined by the first meeting of the season between front-runners Cedar Park and Rouse on the Timberwolves hardwoods.
For Georgetown, the Lady Eagles posted several season bests against an Elgin team that saw only three players break into the scoring column.  Bests included most points in a game, 65 (prevous best,  55), fewest points allowed in a game, 17 (previous best, 20), lowest shooting percentage by an opponent, 9 percent, 3 of 33 attempts, including one of 13 beyond the arc.
The Lady Eagles have now held six of their last nine opponents to 30 or fewer points.
While Elgin was unable to find the basket, Georgetown was having one of its best offensive night’s of the campaign, making 51 percent of its shots (27 of 52, including eight of 16 from beyond the arc).
Georgetown took an 18-4 lead in the first quarter as Elgin scored its only two 2-point baskets of the game in the openinbg 5:38 of the contest. The Lady Eagles increased their advantage to 39-7 as the Wilcats made just three of four free throws. It was 55-15 after three as Elgin scored its only 3-pointer in the period.
