After standing up to cancer in an emotional pregame “Cancer Warriors” presentation with visiting opponent Bastrop Tuesday night at Eagle Gym, the Georgetown Lady Eagles improved their District 19-5A record to 4-0 with a one-sided victory over the Lady Bears.
The Lady Eagles overpowered Bastrop, 68-8, in a game in which the Lady Bears were minus three players with what whas called the “flu,” including standout Peniah Waites.
In was the second consecutive dominating performance by the Lady Eagles as they were coming off a 65-17 road victroy over Elgin on Friday night.
However, things should be getting much tougher for the Lady Eagles in their next three 19-5A battles as the visit arch-rival East View at 6 p.m. Friday in a boys-girls doubleheader on the Patriots’ court, close pre-Christmas work against Rouse at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, and return from the holiday at front-running Cedar Park at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3.
The Timberwolves (5-0) took control of the race on Tuesday night with a 51-44 homecourt victory over Rouse, which now stands 3-1, tied for third with Pflugerville Connally.
East View (1-3) has already played Rouse and Cedar Park and is coming off a 57-29 win over Bastrop Cedar Creek on Tuesday night.
“Obviously, they would have been much better than that, if they had all their players,” GHS coach Rhonda Farney said after 60-point win on Tuesday. “Our kids had fun and played well.”
The eight-point yield by the Georgetown defense equalled the second lowest in school history, matching the number allowed in a victory over Clarksville in early December in 2010.
The GHS defense held the Lady Beats to just three baskets in 21 attempts (14 centercent), including only one of four beyond the arch.  The Lady Eagles posted 33 steals and forced 30 turnovers and took a 24-10 edge on the boards.
Offensively, the Lady Eagles, turning steals and turnovers into baskets, shot 58 percent from the flooe (28 of 48), including eight of 18 treys. For the third time in the last seven games, break-away sophomore guard Kylie Ellsworth led Georgetown scoring with  15 points. Junior guard Ali Isbell, hitting all four of her shots beyond the arc, added 14 points all nine Lady Eagles scored.
Riding nine points by Ellsworth, the Lady Eagles took an 18-4 lead after the first quarter with Bastrop’s only points being a trey by Brenna Lester and a free throw by DeMoyNaye Rector. GHS blanked Bastrop, 20-0, in the second quarter. They completed the victory by outscoring Bastrop, 17-2, in the third quarter and 13-2 in the fourth.
Ellsworth and Isbell were supposrted on the scoresheet by sophomore forward McCall Hampton with nine points and junior Jaelyn Knight, senior Josie Weirich and sophomore Samari O”Brien with seven each. Senior Maddie Vickers had seven assists and two blocks, junior Jade Smith had four blocks and five rebounds and Hampton had five rebounds and five steals. Vickers and sophomore Mackenzy Mouton also hade five steals.
The was only a total of 15 fouls called in the game.
GHS also dominated on the sub-varsity level as the JV and Freshmen Blue both improved to 4-0 in disttrict. The JV (15-1 for the campaign) took a 52-11 decision and the Freshman Blue (14-2 on the year) prevailed, 42-5.
Mercedes Robledo and Kienana San Miguel paced the JV with points totals of 13 a nd 10, respectively.
Nine different players scored in the Freshman Blue’s victory with Lauren Woodard leading the way with seven.
The Freshman White was idle Tuesday, after winning the Bowie Tournament Saturday with wins over Austin Akins, 69-4; Buda Hays, 22-21;  and East View, 26-19. In the Hays game, Cheyanne Garcia was fouled shooting as time expired. She went to the   line and nailed the game-winning free throw with no time remaining., locking down the spot in the finals.
“I was pleased with the way all the sub-varsity teams played,” Farney said.
