For the second consecutive game, Georgetown’s Lady Eagles overcame a sluggish first half with a dominant second-half performance Monday to post a 43-22 over Victoria East at Eagle Gym.
Those folks called “they” say a win is a win. but Georgetown coach Rhonda Farney isn’t exactly enamored with the way her Lady Eagles have performed in their fourth and fifth victories of the season. After trailing 15-12 and leading 17-12 at the half and blowing the opposition away in the second half 36-9 and 26-10, she would like to see a more-uniform positive performance over the entire course of the game.
“It’s time for us to grow up,” she said after GHS improved its season record to 5-3 with the win over a Victoria East team that fell to 2-6. “We need to put together a consistant, complete game. Our guard play needs to improve and be ready to create  the ofensive opportunities.
“We have to continue to play good defense and rebound well. Those are our saving graces right now.  I though Jaelyn (junior forward Knight) played well in the second half and (sophomore post Mackenzy) Mouton continues to improve.”
Farney will be looking for that more-even performance on Friday when the Lady Eagles travel to Houston Friday for a 1 p.m. battle with Houston Wheatley at Delmar Fieldhouse, the site of the Region III-5A Tournament in February.  The District 24-4A favorite Wildcats are 5-0 on the year and coming off a 66-22 win over Wharton and a 47-17 decision against Houston North Forest.
After the Wheatley trip, GHS will face one of its busiest weeks of the campaign. They will open the 16-game 19-5A derby at home against Pflugerville Connally at 7 p.m. Tuesday.  Then they will be the host team in their own Jack Frost Invitational Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
Georgetown built a 9-3 lead in a first quarter in which 10 of the 12 points scored were on free throws — foreshadowing in a game with 41 persornal fouls (18 against GHS and 23 against the visiting Titans.  The only basket in the period was by Mouton. It came with four minutes and 23 seconds remaining in the quarter, making the score 4-3 and putting the Lady Eagles ahead to stay.
The Titans outscored GHS, 9-8, in the second quarter and didn’t make their first field goal of the game until guard Susie Hernandez sank a 3-pointer with 2:19 remaing before halftime. The Lady Eagles’ only two field goals in the second quarter were scored by sophomore post McCall Hampton underneath and senior point guard Josie Weirich off a steal.
After a bucket-and-one by the Titans cut the just lead to 17-15 early in the third quarter, GHS ran off 12 unanswered points to lead 29-15 with 24 minutes in the books. The 5-11 Knight led the rally with nine of her game-high 15 points.  She was the only player on either side to score more than eight points. Georgetown competed the one-sided win by outscoring Victoria East, 14-7, in the final quarter.
Neither team excited followers of shooting percentages. GHS made 10 of 33 (30.3 percent), including just one of seven beyond the arch. The  Lady Eagles were 22 of 31 from the line.   Things were considerably more dismal for the Titans, who got off just 24 shots and made only six, one of nine from downtown.  However, they were 13 of 18 from the line.  The visitor’s top scorer Leilani Wimbish-Gay had eight points.
Senior guard Maddie Vickers made her presence felt for GHS with seven points, three assists and team highs of eight rebounds and five steals. Hampton added six rebounds and Knight and Mouton had four each.

The Georgetown defense forced 23 turnovers.

The three GHS sub-varsity teams made it a complete sweep Monday. The JV beat Victoria East, 39-15; the Freshman Blue dominated the young Titans, 60-5; and the Freshman White bested Copperas Cove 59-13.
Guard Gracie Harris scored 24 points in the Freshmen Blue’s victory and Megan Herring had 19 points for the Freshman White. Kylee Sander had 11 points for the JV.
