GHS—FROSTDAY2

By GALEN WELLNICKI

Georgetown’s Lady Eagles escaped an early funk to upend Lubbock Coronado,
51-33, on Friday night in their final pool game to earn a spot opposite San Antonio Incarnate Word in the Silver Brackett semifinals at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at Eagle Gym.

If the Lady Eagles (6-5) beat Incarnate Word (13-1), they will advance to the Silver finals against either Houston Westbury Christian or Hurst Bell at 3:30 p.m. in the GHS Auxiliary Gym. The IWA Shamrocks dropped a 69-39 decision to Liberty Hill in their Pool B final on Friday afternoon.

“We’re excited to get to play Incarnate Word on Saturday and we’d love to get a chance to play LD Bell in the Silver finals,” GHS coach Rhonda Farney said.

As for Friday’s win over the Mustangs, Farney said, “I felt like we had a hangover from last night (a 62-56 loss to eventual pool winner and second-ranked San Antonio Wagner). Also we were slowed by tacky-tack fouls early, but we finally got in rhythm.”

Against Coronado, which fell to 4-9 on the year, Georgetown led only 11-10 after the first quarter as the Mustangs took a 6-1 lead on three baskets by 6-foot-4 Jasmine Tinnell. A pair of free throws by sophomore post Jaelyn Knight put GHS ahead 11-9 for good with 49 seconds remaining in the opening period, which ended with the Lady Eagles up 11-10. Georgetown did not score its first basket—a lay-in by 6-1 senior Dee Day—until just 3:47 remained in the quarter.

The Lady Eagles scored the first eight points in the second quarter, including a 3-pointer and a free throw by senior point guard Brooke Elliott to go up 19-10. However, the Mustangs cup the deficit to 24-17 at the half.
Led by five points each from senior Taylor Elliott, Day and Brooke Elliott the Lady Eagles outscored Coronado, 19-11, in the third quarter to take control 41-28 advantage with one period remaining. Georgetown’s largest lead of the night was 20 points at 51-31 on a basket by Emily Jones with 49 seconds left to play.
Neither team shot well from the floor, GHS was 16 of 45, while the Mustangs made 10 of 26. Also the Lady Eagles only found the range on 16 of their 30 free-throw attempts. Knight and Day led the Georgetown scoring with 13 and 11 points, respectively. B. Elliott had nine and freshman Emery Herman added eight.
GHS posted a 27-23 edge on the boards with Tinnell having a game-high seven. Day led GHS with six. B. Elliott had six of Georgetown’s 10 assists and along with Herman added five of the Lady Eagles’ 21 steals.

After finishing tournament action Saturday, the Lady Eagles (1-0 in 19-5A) will return to district action when they play Hutto at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Hutto, The Lady Hippos are 1-1 in district.
